Why Choose Mount Vernon Computers for Microsoft?

Microsoft Surface devices combine the portability of a tablet with the power of a laptop, but their compact design makes repair tricky. We have experience working with the unique form factor of Surface devices and can handle repairs that many generalist shops aren't comfortable with.

    Common Microsoft Error Codes

Microsoft Surface devices display specific error screens and recovery messages when storage or the operating system fails. Here are the most common ones we see.

Surface UEFI Screen (No Windows Boot)

The Surface boots to a red or black UEFI screen instead of Windows — the drive or OS may have failed.

    INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE

Windows blue screen indicating the OS can't access the SSD — common after firmware updates on Surface devices.

    CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED

A critical Windows process crashed — often due to corrupted system files or failing internal storage.

    UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

Windows can't mount the boot partition — file system corruption on the Surface's internal SSD.

    KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR

Data couldn't be read from the SSD — indicates potential storage failure.

    BitLocker Recovery Screen

Surface is requesting a BitLocker recovery key — can appear after drive errors, firmware updates, or hardware changes.

    Automatic Repair Loop

Windows keeps restarting into repair mode — the SSD may have corruption that can't be auto-repaired.

Surface Won't Turn On / Black Screen

No display after pressing power — can indicate SSD failure, firmware corruption, or hardware failure.

    BAD_SYSTEM_CONFIG_INFO

Windows registry or boot configuration is corrupted — often occurs alongside storage degradation.

    Operating System Not Found

UEFI passed but no OS was detected — the internal SSD may have failed.

Surface Overheating / Fan Always Running

Surface devices use fanless or single-fan designs. When the fan runs constantly at full speed or the device overheats and throttles, it may indicate a failed fan, blocked vents, or thermal paste degradation inside the sealed chassis.

Seeing one of these errors? Don't keep restarting — continued use of a failing drive can make data recovery harder or impossible. Call us at 703.635.4265 or schedule a repair for fast diagnosis.

Mount Vernon Computers is my go to computer repair shop every time I have a problem or need help with my computer. Daryl is so nice and professional that you're not scared to ask a question. He has helped me get a computer with motherboard problems repaired and another computer with GPU problems fixed. I got a new computer and needed help so I called them and Daryl was kind enough to do a video call and walked me through my problem and eventually solved it! 10/10 Highly recommend!
